Welcome back to episode 50 of the Nourish Your Potential podcast. I feel so lucky to have registered clinical psychologist Dr Lotte Williams joining me in this episode. Originally from the south of England, Lotte moved to New Zealand in 2016 and has since gained extensive experience in various mental health settings including work with paediatric diabetes and complex pain management at Starship Hospital in Auckland. Now based in Christchurch, she runs her own private practice called Ascent Psychology whilst also working alongside the eating disorder service, Axis sport medicine and is part of the healthcare team behind Femmi. With a background in ultra running and endurance events Lotte has personal insights into the mental aspects of athletic performance and is particularly passionate about empowering women in sport. In this episode we explore the pros and cons of social media apps like Strava and Instagram, discuss the harm of filters and unattainable beauty standards, navigate the athlete mindset, and tackle issues surrounding self-worth, perfectionism and the impacts of under fuelling on the brain. Julia has had a really strong few years both in multisport and running with a respectable list of wins and course records in the last 12 months with a real breakthrough performance at Tarawera 100km in February making top 10 women in an extremely competitive field. We talk about Julia’s time growing up in rural Darfield, reflect back on her race at Tarawera and taking the female BYU course record last October, as well as her work-life balance, views on nutrition and much more.
